“Doth verily do I bid thee welcome to the Shire of Owlsherst!”

ChatelaineNo we don’t actually talk like that, very few people in the SCA do first person impressions, but you can if you want to.  Just expect to be asked for translations.

Robert the TallHi, my name is Robert the Tall and my job as Chatelaine ( French for the title of the wife of the lord of a castle) is to both welcome you to the Shire of Owlsherst and to help you set your feet on the path on your journey through the Society for Creative Anachronisms (the SCA for short and its members are known as Scadians).

Notice I said “your feet” and “your journey”.  That’s because that is exactly what it is “yours“.  What do you want to make of it, what do you want to be, what do you want to learn?

So my first question to you is:

What do you like to do?

Don’t answer that one yet think about it and we’ll talk about it later, but what ever it is, my job is to introduce you to the people in the Shire of Owlsherst who like to do the same things you do.

One of the first questions we seemed to get asked is “How much does this cost?”

Not as much as you think and considerably less than attending a Renn Faire.  And the nice thing is instead of being ‘outside’ of the Renn Faire and looking in, you are now a participant.  At one of our events this year we had archery (OK I’m biased I’m an Archery Marshal too), heavy fighting, thrown weapons, an Arts and Sciences competition, we played long ball (an ancestor of baseball), had a foot race and ate a quite excellent feast.  At our annual 12th Night event in January, we had heavy fighting, Arts and Sciences, we sang and danced, people played music, we had theatrical performances and again more food than you can imagine.  And an impromptu cartwheel demonstration.

I can help get you started at a event with loaner garb, so there you can try us out without having made an investment in clothes.  Are you attending the feast, I can arrange for loaner feast gear, no picnic basket to carry.  Do want to try you hand at archery or thrown weapons? Again we have loaner gear.  Want to see if you really have what is takes to stand face-to-face with a foe in armor and duke it out?  Well we can loan you equipment and train you how to do that too.
